As we head into the new year, many people will resolve to make 2023 the year that they achieve their fitness goals. Unfortunately, research tells us that the average resolver will give up on their ambitions by February 15th of the new year. If you want to be one of the few who commits to real change, then these are six ways to motivate you to follow through for this year and many years to come.
1. Small Habits Add Up to Global Changes Where many people lose speed is assuming that you have to make substantial and global changes to achieve your goals. The reality is that when you make overwhelming changes, it can feel, well, overwhelming, and it’s easier to feel like it isn’t possible and you should give up. If you have the mindset that every pound lost is better than a pound gained, then you are more likely to cut back than to stay the same or even gain. Commit to making the small changes that will add up big time over time. 2. Lose the All or Nothing Attitude The reason many people fail when trying to lose weight is that they develop an “all or nothing” attitude that leads them to either cut calories severely or not at all. Sure, we all want change, but trying to change a year’s worth of gaining weight overnight to losing is like setting yourself up for failure. You don’t have to cut everything enjoyable and go cold turkey; you can go warm turkey and make small strides every day to get where you want to be – maybe not as quickly, but it will be more lasting. 3. Refocus Your Goals The idea behind losing weight is almost always going to be about looks, but that is where people fail. You want to look good, but if we’re going to be honest, looks fade – so focus on something more sustainable and critical like longevity, feeling good, enjoying life, and having more energy. When you stop focusing on the scale and more on the overall enjoyment of life, being active, and living longer, it makes much more sense to take the right steps. When weight loss is completely aesthetically motivated, it is much easier to lose focus. Meaning is often what keeps us going, so put more meaning than just being attractive behind your goals, and you are more likely to find meaning in achieving them. 4. Skip to the End at the Beginning When some people think about working out, they think about the first step of putting shoes on and hitting the pavement. The key is to picture the end of working out and the benefits that you feel. Not many people wish that they hadn’t worked out after they are done. If you can visualize how good you feel in the aftermath of exercising, you are more likely to skip to the good parts. Eyes on the prize, people – it is much easier to stay on task when you reset your mindset. 5. “Do What You Like” is the Truth All the Way Around If you have ever heard the phrase “Do what you like for a living and you will never work a day in your life,” it’s true about more than just work. Not everyone likes to lift weights, spend their time at the gym, or count calories for a living. If you find a sport that you enjoy, an activity that you find worthwhile, or a general way to enjoy the free time that allows you to get the exercise you need to lose weight, find it, stick to it, and live it. You don’t have to hit the gym, cut back on everything you love, or feel like you are missing out. When you do that, you’re setting yourself up for failure. 6.
